WORK IN PROGRESS: Editing books on African cities.

SIDELIGHTS: Toyin Falola once told CA: "My interest for the past twenty years has been to analyze Africa since the nineteenth century. I focus on the understanding of history, how this history affects the present, and how the twin problems of underdevelopment and political instability can be solved. This is hard work! My strategy is to write for an academic audience, mainly by way of primary research; to present academic work in synthesis, in textbooks for schools and colleges; and to advise the government by way of policy-oriented papers.

"My inspiration has been drawn by the challenge posed by the prevalence of the African crisis, the need to explore neglected issues, and even to keep correcting a barrage of misleading interpretations about the continent. It is endless—one work leads to the other; the day blends into night; and my ambition is fulfilled only when I read and write."
