DOTY, Carolyn H(ouse) 1941-2003

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born July 28, 1941, in Tooele, UT; died of a heart attack March 10, 2003, in Lawrence, KS. Educator and author. Doty was a novelist who wrote psychological dramas; she was also well known as the director of the Squaw Valley Writers Conference fiction program. Completing her B.F.A. degree at the University of Utah in 1963, she was an assistant director for the School Testing Service in Berkeley, California, from 1965 to 1970, but mostly occupied herself as a wife and mother until her divorce in 1977. She then attended the writing program at the University of California, Irvine, where she completed her master's degree in 1979. Afterwards, she lectured at San Francisco State University in 1980 and published her first novel, A Day Late the same year. From 1984 to 1986 she was a lecturer at the University of California, Irvine; she then moved to Lawrence, Kansas, to teach at the University of Kansas, where she remained until her untimely death. At the same time she was teaching and writing, Doty directed the fiction program at the Squaw Valley Writers Conference in San Francisco from 1980 until 2000, even though she had moved away from California in 1986. She published three more novels—Fly Away Home (1982), What She Told Him (1985), and Whisper (1992), the last of which was a Literary Guild selection. She was working on another novel, Vanishing Point, at the time of her death.
