SIDELIGHTS: John Francis DeFrancis told CA: "Learning that China's greatest writer, Lu Xun, advocated replacing the Chinese character writing with an alphabetic script converted me to his point of view and led to much of my work on the Chinese language and writing system.

"I have three primary motivations for writing: to help Western students learn Chinese, to promote alphabetic writing of Chinese, and to correct the mistaken view that Chinese writing is ideographic."
