See index for CA sketch: Born July 23, 1932, in Manila, Philippines; died of cancer, March 27, 2007, in Washington, DC. Educator and author. A retired professor of philosophy, Cua was a leading authority on Chinese philosophy and its history. He earned his B.A. from Far Eastern University in Manila before immigrating to the United States for his graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley. Here he completed an M.A. in 1954 and a Ph.D. in 1958. After completing his doctorate, Cua taught at Ohio University. From 1962 to 1969 he was professor of philosophy and chair of his department at the State University of New York at Oswego. Cua joined the Catholic University of America faculty in 1969, teaching there until his 1996 retirement. In addition to Western philosophy, Cua was interested in Confucian ethics, about which he wrote in such books as Ethical Argumentation (1985), Moral Vision and Tradition: Essays in Chinese Ethics (1998), and his last book, Human Nature, Ritual and History: Studies in Xunzi and Chinese Philosophy (2005). The chief editor of the Encyclopedia of Chinese Philosophy (2002), Cua was the president of such organizations as the International Society for Chinese Philosophy, the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy, and the Association for Asian Studies.
