SIDELIGHTS:

Spanish artist, jeweler, and teacher Carles Codina has applied his decades of experience to three instructive books in his field. La joyería, published in English translation as The Complete Book of Jewelry Making in 2000, is a comprehensive look at the full range of techniques available to modern jewelers. Reviewing the work for Booklist, Barbara Jacobs stated that the book "enables amateurs and professionals alike to stretch their imaginations." In Orfebrería, published in English translation as Goldsmithing and Silver Work: Jewelry, Vessels, and Ornaments in 2003, Codina discusses Spanish metalworking techniques and includes information on gemstone setting. Library Journal contributor Constance Ashmore Fairchild described this volume as "an excellent professional-level book." Codina's third book, Nueva joyería, published in English translation as The New Jewelry: Contemporary Materials and Techniques in 2005, shows how to make jewelry from a wide variety of alternative materials, including cardboard, plastics, rice paper, and plant seeds. Each of the books is extensively illustrated with color photographs and includes several designs with step-by-step instructions.
