COBURN, Louis 1915-2003

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born August 13, 1915, in New York, NY; died January 31, 2003. Librarian, educator, and author. Coburn was a former library-science professor at Queens College of the City University of New York. He received his B.A. and M.S. in education from City College of the City University of New York in 1936 and 1941 respectively; he also earned a B.L.S. from Columbia University in 1938. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Army Air Forces as a cryptographic security officer, becoming a first lieutenant. After the war he continued to work as a high-school library teacher in the Bronx, where he had started his career back in 1938. Then, beginning in 1956, he taught in Jamaica, New York. Coburn joined the faculty at Queens College in 1963, where he was an assistant professor in library science from 1963 to 1973, and an associate professor from 1974 to 1979. He was the author of three books: Case Studies in School Library Administration (1968), Library Media-Center Problems: Case Studies (1973), and Classroom and Field: The Internship in American Library Education (1980).
