Citino, David 1947–2005

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born March 13, 1947, in Cleveland, OH; died of complications from multiple sclerosis, October 17, 2005, in Columbus, OH. Educator and author. Citino was an English professor at Ohio State University, where he was also named the university's poet laureate. Completing his undergraduate work at Ohio University in 1969, he then earned an M.A. and Ph.D. at Ohio State University in 1972 and 1974 respectively. Upon completion of his studies, he remained at Ohio State as an assistant professor at the Marion campus. Upon becoming a full professor in 1985, he moved to the Columbus campus, where he was still a faculty member at the time of his death. An active poet and editor, Citino was on the editorial board at Ohio State University Press, for which he also served as poetry editor. Over the span of his career, he earned numerous awards for his writing and teaching, including the Prize Poems Award in 1977 from Iowa State University Press and Poet and Critic, a National Book Critics Circle notable book citation for his Broken Symmetry (1997), the Ohio State University Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Nancy Dasher Award from the College English Association of Ohio. In 2002 he was named poet laureate of the university. Among Citino's other publications are Last Rites and Other Poems (1980), The House of Memory (1990), and The Invention of Secrecy (2001). More recently, he completed the essay collection Paperwork (2003), coedited the fifth edition of The Bible as Literature (2006), and was contributing editor for The Eye of the Poet: Six Views of the Art and Craft of Poetry (2002).
