PERSONAL: Born September 30, 1966, in Monrovia, Liberia; daughter of Russell N. (an air force officer and professor of education) and Lan (a homemaker; maiden name, Mieu; later surname, Dam) Cassel. Ethnicity: "Hapa." Education: Attended University of Guadalajara, 1984, and University of Tel Aviv, 1986; University of Southern California, B.A. (communication arts and sciences), 1986, B.A. (English; cum laude), 1987; Harvard University, M.A., 1988; University of California Riverside, Ph.D., 1996.
