PERSONAL: Born July 18, 1852, in Ilsenburg, Germany; immigrated to the United States, 1884; died February 11, 1919, in La Salle, IL; son of Gustav (a Protestant minister and church official) and Laura (Krüger) Carus; married Mary Hegler, March 29, 1888. Education: University of Tübingen, Ph.D., 1876; also attended University of Greifswald and University of Strasbourg.
