SIDELIGHTS: Cherie Calbom became interested in juicing vegetables and fruit because of health problems she was experiencing, including chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. She found that consuming these juices, along with other dietary improvements, caused a profound improvement in her health. Her experience led her to earn a master's degree in nutrition and pursue a career as a professional nutritionist. Eventually, she put her expertise and experience together in books such as Juicing for Life: A Guide to the Health Benefits of Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juicing, The Juice Lady's Juicing for High-Level Wellness and Vibrant Good Looks, and The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 101 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More! In Juicing for Life, Calbom and coauthor Maureen Keane provide easy-to-make recipes for a wide variety of juiced drinks which may help certain health conditions. The recipes are categorized alphabetically, according to the problems they may address. Included are recipes for cleansing the body generally and treating specific complaints ranging from chronic fatigue syndrome to acne. A Publishers Weekly reviewer commented that while some readers will undoubtedly dismiss juicing as just another fad, others will "find the volume fascinating, and well worth the investment in a juicer and organic produce." In The Ultimate Smoothie Book, Calbom focuses on concoctions of juice, yogurt, and other ingredients that can make a full meal in a glass. "This volume may be slim, but it packs a lot of information," noted Michael Hastings in Winston-Salem Journal.
