Original name, Jimalee Chitwood; Native name, Ho Chee Nee; born January 23, 1906, in El Reno, OK; died, 2000; married Dan A. Burton, 1933 (died, 1954). Ethnicity: Native American. Education: Attended Southwestern Teachers College, University of Tulsa, and University of New Mexico.

CAREER:

Painter. Art work collected at Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art and Philbrook Museum of Art, both Tulsa, OK; other work represented in group exhibitions, including shows at University of Florida, University of Georgia, U.S. Department of the Interior, Five Civilized Tribes Museum, Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, M. S. De Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco, CA, Galveston Art Center, and Denver Art Museum. Program supervisor and host of a radio program in Oklahoma, from 1930s to 1940s; also songwriter and poet.

AWARDS, HONORS:

Purchase Award, Philbrook Museum of Art, 1957; award from National Penwoman Association, for the short story "Indian Legend of Creation."
