Born June 6, 1875, in New York, NY; died after a heart attack, October 30, 1936, in Washington, DC; buried in Church of St. Paul the Apostle, New York, NY; son of Patrick (a blacksmith) and Mary Catherine (Regan) Burke. Education: St. Francis Xavier College, New York, NY, A.B., 1896; Catholic University of America, S.T.B., 1899, S.T.L., 1901.

CAREER:

Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle (Paulist Fathers), ordained Roman Catholic priest, 1896-1936. Catholic World, editor, 1904-22; Paulist Press (publishing company), founder. Committee of Six (advisors to U.S. secretary of war), Roman Catholic representative and chair, 1918; Chaplain's Aid Association (later known as National Catholic Welfare Council and National Catholic Welfare Conference), founder during World War I, general secretary, 1919-36.

MEMBER:

Catholic Press Association (cofounder, 1911).

AWARDS, HONORS:

Distinguished Service Medal, 1919, for wartime work; honorary D.S.T., 1927; named domestic prelate by Pope Pius XII, 1936.
