SIDELIGHTS:

Lauren Brown, a producer for Sirius Satellite Radio, has written several biographies, based largely on secondary sources, of young movie stars. Her subjects include Lindsay Lohan, the star of such films as Freaky Friday and Mean Girls; Emma Roberts, a member of a show-business family (she is the daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts), who has been making movies since age nine and is the Hollywood's newest incarnation of teen detective Nancy Drew; and Reese Witherspoon, who has grown from a star of light comedies (Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama) to a respected dramatic actress, winning an Oscar for playing June Carter Cash in Walk the Line. Brown deals with the actresses' personal lives as well as their careers—for instance, chronicling Witherspoon's marriage to and divorce from actor Ryan Phillippe.

Some critics have found little that was new or groundbreaking in Brown's celebrity bios, but they nevertheless noted that the books will be of interest to fans of the stars. Of Emma Roberts: Simply Fabulous!, R.J. Carter, reviewing for Trades, observed: "If you absolutely must know the name of Emma's cat (it's Coco Chanel) or that her favorite movies are ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Legally Blonde’, then Brown has done you the favor of collecting all that data into one place." In Reese Witherspoon, a Kirkus Reviews contributor related, Brown portrays the actress "as a talented and hardworking professional," but along the way "reveals no surprises." The commentator recommended the book only to Witherspoon's "most devoted" fans.
