Bresler was a practicing barrister who later gained attention as a legal journalist and author of popular books on various legal issues. A graduate of the Sorbonne and King's College, Cambridge, he was called to the Bar Middle Temple in 1951 at the very young age of twenty-one. As a practicing lawyer, he worked on cases involving everything from family and civil law to criminal law, but he began to gain public attention by contributing columns on legal advice to various newspapers, such as the Daily Mail and Sunday Express. The popularity of these columns led Bresler to be sought after as a legal correspondent on British television and radio, beginning in 1955. He also became a popular author of books ranging in subject from biographies to studies on criminal law. Among these are Reprieve: A Study of a System (1965), Within the Law: A Practical Guide for the Layman (1976), The Mystery of Georges Simenon (1983), The Murder of John Lennon (1989), Law without a Lawyer (1995; 2nd edition, 2000), Napoleon III: A Life (1999), and The Daily Telegraph A-Z of Motoring Law (2001).
