(George Barry Bingham, Jr.)
OBITUARY NOTICE—
See index for CA sketch: Born September 23, 1933, in Louisville, KY; died of respiratory failure, April 3, 2006, in Louisville, KY. Publisher and editor. Bingham led his family newspapers the Louisville Times and Louisville Courier-Journal from 1971 to 1986. A 1956 graduate of Harvard University, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years and then briefly worked in broadcasting for the Columbia Broadcasting Systems and the National Broadcasting Company. Joining his family's businesses in 1962, he worked for WHAS and the printing company Standard Gravure Corp., as well as the family newspapers. When his brother Worth died in a car accident, Bingham was asked to take over as editor and publisher of the two newspapers. Striving for high professional standards and ethics, he led the Times and Courier Journal for fifteen years. He eventually tried to remove his sisters, mother, and his wife from the executive board and replace them with professional journalists, but the maneuver backfired on him. His father ended the feud by selling the newspapers.
