SIDELIGHTS: French director Jean-Jacques Annaud first came to public attention with the film Noirs et blancs en couleur (also known as Black and White in Color), which he wrote and directed. This satirical/farcical film, set in west Africa in 1915 and dramatizing a colonial war between French and German forces, was termed "a masterpiece" by National Review's John Simon in a review of another Annaud film, Wings of Courage. The next film Annaud wrote and directed was Coup de tête (also known as Hot Head), another comedy, this one about the competition between two factories' soccer teams. These films received positive critical attention, but were perceived as "art films" and were not large-scale commercial successes.

Since then, Annaud has written and/or directed several big-budget Hollywood films, including the historical dramas Seven Years in Tibet (starring Brad Pitt) and Enemy at the Gates (starring Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes, and Ed Harris). The latter film, which Annaud wrote and directed, was based on the true story of Vasily Zaitsev, a Russian farm boy who became one of the heroes of the World War II battle of Stalingrad because of his sniping skills. When Zaitsev's successes at picking off German officers become too embarrassing for the Nazis, they send a master sniper after him. "It's a great premise, one full of visual and dramatic possibilities," a reviewer noted in BusinessWorld.

Annaud is also notable in the film world for writing and directing the first feature film to be shot in the IMAX 3D format. Wings of Courage is based on the true story of one of the pilots of the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, a corporation that flew mail along dangerous routes from France to locations throughout South American in the early days of flight. On one mail-hauling trip, solo pilot Henri Guillaumet's plane goes down in the Andes. This should be a death sentence, but, buoyed up by the thought of his young wife depending on him, Guillaumet sets out to hike his way out of the mountains. Although some viewers might perceive the use of the unusual large-screen 3D format as a gimmick, "I doubt whether standard film could have conveyed the same immediacy, vastness, pitilessness: the same palpability of hurdles to overcome," Simon wrote in National Review.

Annaud also adapted Marguerite Duras's autobiographical novel about a girl's sexual coming of age in colonial east Asia into the film L'amant (The Lover). The teenage girl, who is never named, meets a wealthy Chinese businessman as she travels by ferry from her widowed mother's home in Vietnam to her boarding school in Saigon. For a year and a half, the two carry on their affair, until the businessman enters into an arranged marriage and the girl and her family return to their native France. Annaud's work in this film is "lovely," Stanley Kauffmann wrote in New Republic; he "avoids any hint of either triteness or exploitation" in the film's most intimate scenes.
