SIDELIGHTS:

Veterinarian Lowell J. Ackerman has written, compiled, and edited numerous books on the topics of animal health, behavior, and training. As a board-certified veterinary dermatologist, Ackerman has written a number of specialized texts covering skin care in dogs, cats, and horses. He also wrote a series of guidebooks, each covering a different dog breed.

Noteworthy among Ackerman's books is Happy Dog: How Busy People Care for Their Dog: A Stress-free Guide for All Dog Owners, which he wrote with Arden Moore. The book includes advice on such topics as how to choose an appropriate breed, advice for owners wishing to travel with their dog, training methods, choosing a pet sitter, and how owners can otherwise keep their dogs happy and healthy while they are away. Florence Scarinci, in Library Journal, complimented the authors' "breezy, easy-to-understand style," and found the volume to be "a comprehensive guide for today's busy person who wants to enjoy the companionship of a dog." The volume also contains a bibliography and links for related Internet resources.
