Wolf, Ernst Wilhelm
Wolf, Ernst Wilhelm, German composer; b. Grossenbehringen, near Gotha (baptized), Feb. 25,1735; d. Weimar (buried), Dec. 1, 1792. After studies at the Eisenach and Gotha Gymnasien, he entered the Univ. of Jena (1755), where he was made director of the collegium musicum. He was active in Naumburg as a music teacher to the von Ponickau family before becoming music tutor to the sons of Duchess Anna Amalia in Weimar; later was named court Konzertmeister (1761), organist (1763), and Kapellmeister (1772) there. He publ. Auch eine Reise aber nur eine kleine Musik in den Monaten Junius, Julius und August 1782 zum Vergnügen angestellt und auf Verlangen beschrieben (Weimar, 1784), Vorbericht als eine Anleitung zum guten Vortrag beim Klavier-Spielen (Leipzig, 1785), and Musikalischer Unterricht für Liebhaber und diejenigen, welche die Musik treiben und lehren wollen (Dresden, 1788).
