Winograd, Arthur

Winograd, Arthur, American cellist and conductor; b. N.Y., April 22, 1920. He studied at the New England Cons. of Music in Boston (1937-40) and at the Curtis Inst. of Music in Philadelphia (1940-41). He played the cello in the Boston Sym. Orch. (1940-41) and in the NBC Sym. Orch. in N.Y. (1942-43), then was a member of the Juilliard String Quartet and the faculty of the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y. (1946-55). He was active as a conductor for MGM Records (1954-58) and Audio Fidelity Records (1958-60), then as music director of the Birmingham (Ala.) Sym. Orch. (1960-64) and the Hartford (Conn.) Sym. Orch. (1964-85).
