Wagner, Georg Gottfried

Wagner, Georg Gottfried, German violinist and composer; b. Mühlberg, April 5, 1698; d. Plauen, March 23, 1756. He studied with Kuhnau at the Thomasschule in Leipzig (1712-18) and also studied at the Univ. of Leipzig (1718-26). He was a violinist in Bach’s orch. and was recommended by Bach for the post of cantor at Plauen, which he held from 1726 to his death. He wrote numerous sacred works and instrumental compositions; his motet Lob und Ehrewas misattributed to Bach by Breitkopf & Härtel (publ. 1819 as BWV anh.162).
