Tuukkanen, Kalervo

Tuukkanen, Kalervo, Finnish conductor and composer; b. Mikkeli, Oct. 14,1909; d. Helsinki, July 12, 1979. He studied composition with Leevi Madetoja and theory with Krohn in Helsinki. He subsequently conducted local orchs. and choirs; from 1967 to 1969 he was a visiting prof, of music at the Chinese Univ. of Hong Kong. He wrote 2 violin concertos (1943, 1956), 6 syms. (1944, 1949, 1952, 1958, 1961, 1978), Cello Concerto (1946), Sinfonietta (1948), Man and the Elementsfor Soprano, Chorus, and Orch. (1949), lndumati,opera (1962), Youth Cantata (1963), and A Chorale Echofor Flute and Piano (1967). He also publ. a monograph on the life and works of Leevi Madetoja (Helsinki, 1947).
