Trythall, (Harry) Gil(bert),American composer and teacher, brother of Richard Trythall; b. Knox-ville, Term., Oct. 28, 1930. He studied theory and composition with David Van Vactor at the Univ. of Tenn. (B.A., 1951), composition with Riegger at Northwestern Univ. (M.Mus., 1952), and composition with Palmer and musicology with Grout at Cornell Univ. (D.M.A., 1960). He was asst. prof, at Knox Coll. in Galesburg, 111. (1960-64); after serving as prof, of theory and composition (1964-75) and chairman of the music school (1973-75) at George Peabody Coll. for Teachers in Nashville, he was prof, of music (from 1975) and dean of the creative arts center (1975-81) at W.Va. Univ. in Morgantown. He publ. Principles and Practices of Electronic Music (N.Y., 1974), Eighteenth Century Counterpoint (Dubuque, Iowa, 1993), and Sixteenth Century Counterpoint (Dubuque, Iowa, 1994).
