Torelli, Gasparo
Torelli, Gasparo, Italian composer and poet; b. Borgo S. Sepolcro, near Lucca, date unknown; d. probably in Padua, c. 1613. He entered the clergy, and by 1593 was active in Padua, where he was associated with the Accademia degli Avveduti (from 1601). He set a number of his own texts to music. Among his works are a favola pastorale for 4 Voices, Ifidi amanti (Venice, 1600; ed. by B. Somma and L. Bianchi in Capolavori Polifonici del Secolo XVI, Vol. VII, 1967), as well as Canzonette for 3 Voices (Venice, 1593), II secondo libro delle canzonette for 3 to 4 Voices (Venice, 1598), Brevi concetti d’amore: II primo libro de madrigali for 5 Voices (Venice, 1598), and Amorose faville: II quarto libro delle canzonette for 3 Voices (Venice, 1608).
