Tolonen, Jouko (Paavo Kalervo)

Tolonen, Jouko (Paavo Kalervo), Finnish musicologist and composer; b. Porvoo, Nov. 2, 1912; d. Turku, July 23, 1986. He studied piano with Linko, composition with Krohn, Madetoja, and Fougestedt, and conducting in Helsinki, then pursued training in musicology at the Univ. there (Ph.D., 1969). He was director of the music dept. of the Finnish Broadcasting Co. (1946-55) and general director of the Finnish National Opera (1956-60); taught at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (1960-66) and at the Univ. of Turku (from 1965), where he was prof, of musicology (1972-77). He composed Andante and Rondo alla burla for Orch. (1948), Andante for Piano and Strings (1950), Sym. (1952), 3 Arabesques for Orch. (1953), Les Fanfares for Brass (1970), incidental music for plays and films, and vocal pieces.
