Thuille, Ludwig (Wilhelm Andreas Maria)

Thuille, Ludwig (Wilhelm Andreas Maria), renowned Austrian composer and pedagogue; b. Bozen, Tirol, Nov. 30, 1861; d. Munich, Feb. 5, 1907. He studied theory, piano, and organ with Joseph Pembaur in Innsbruck, then went to Munich, where he was a pupil of Karl Bärmann (piano) and Joseph Rheinberger (composition) at the Königliche Musikschule, graduating with honors in 1882; in 1883 he joined its faculty and was promoted to prof, in 1890. Encouraged by Alexander Ritter, he began to compose music in the grand Wagnerian manner. He wrote 3 operas and other works, but he made his mark chiefly as a fine pedagogue. With Rudolf Louis, he publ. the well-known manual Harmonielehre (1907; abr. ed. as Grundriss der Harmonielehre, 1908; 10th ed., rev., 1933 by W. Courvoisier and others).
