Thibault, Geneviève (La Comtesse Hubert de Chambure)
Thibault, Geneviève (La Comtesse Hubert de Chambure), French musicologist; b. Neuilly-sur-Seine, May 20, 1902; d. Strasbourg, Aug. 31, 1975. She went to Paris and studied piano with L. Levy (1919-20), harmony and counterpoint with Eugene Cools (1915-20), and fugue and organ with Boulanger (1917-23). She also took courses at the Sorbonne (diplome d’Études Supérieurs, 1920), and later completed her musicological training with Pirro at the École des Hautes Études (diploma, 1952). She became engaged in business, but continued her great interest in musical research; assembled a fine private library, containing rare eds. of Renaissance music, which she opened to research scholars; initiated the Société de Musique d’Autrefois in 1925, for the purpose of presenting concerts of early music performed on early instruments; from 1955 she lectured at the Sorbonne.
