Thalben–Ball, Sir George (Thomas)
Thalben-Ball, Sir George (Thomas), Australian-born English organist, choirmaster, teacher, and composer; b. Sydney, June 18, 1896; d. London, Jan. 18, 1987. He was a student of Parry, Stanford, and Davies at the Royal Coll. of Music in London. At the age of 16, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Coll. of Organists in London. He served as acting organist (1919-23) and as organist and choirmaster (1928-81) at the Temple Church in London, and also was a teacher at the Royal Coll. of Music. From 1949 to 1983 he likewise served as city and Univ. organist in Birmingham. In 1967 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1982 he was knighted. Among his compositions were choral works and organ music.
