Telemann, Georg Michael

Telemann, Georg Michael, German composer and writer on music, grandson of Georg Philipp Telemann; b. Plon, April 20, 1748; d. Riga, March 4, 1831. He was reared and trained in music by his grandfather in Hamburg, and matriculated at the Univ. of Kiel (1768). He was a teacher at the Nicolaischule in Hamburg before settling in Riga as Kantor and teacher at the cathedral school (1773-1828), where he oversaw performances of many of his grandfather’s works in his own eds.

Works

Beytrag zur Kirchenmusik, 10 choral anthems for 2 to 4 Voices, Oboes, 2 Trumpets, Horn, Timpani, Strings, and Basso Continuo, and 10 chorale preludes and 2 fugues for Organ (Königsberg and Leipzig, 1785); Sammlung alter und neuer Choralmelodien für das seit 1810 in...Riga eingeführte Neue Gesangbuch (Mitau, 1811-12); a few occasional choral works, including the cantata Deutschlands Pflegerin for the installation of C.P.E. Bach as Hamburg Kantor (1768).
