Tan Melvyn, talented Singaporean fortepianist and harpsichordist; b. Singapore, Oct. 13, 1956. He went to England, where he entered the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey when he was 12; later pursued training at the Royal Coll. of Music in London. His principal mentors were Perlemuter and Boulanger. After commencing his career as a pianist, he took up the fortepiano and harpsichord in 1980; he subsequently appeared in the major British music centers, and in 1985 made his first tour of the U.S. In 1987 he won critical accolades as soloist in a series of Beethoven concerts, with Roger Norrington conducting the London Classical Players. In 1990 he toured in France, Germany, Japan, and Australia, and also played at N.Y.’s Carnegie Hall
