Suppan, Wolfgang
Suppan, Wolfgang, Austrian musicologist; b. Irdning, Aug. 5, 1933. He studied clarinet, violin, piano, and theory at the Graz Hochschule für Musik and musicology with Federhofer and Marx at the Univ. of Graz (Ph.D., 1959, with the diss. Heinrich Eduard Joseph von Lannoy [1787-1853]: Leben und Werke). He worked in Freiburg im Breisgau at the East German Folklore Inst. (1961-63) and as director of the music dept. of the Folk Song Archive (1963-71). He completed his Habilitation at the Univ. of Mainz in 1971. He became a prof. and director of the Ethnomusicological Inst. of the Graz Hochschule für Musik in 1974. His research focuses on European folk music and music education.
