Sumsion, Herbert (Whitton) (b Gloucester, 1899; d Frampton-on-Severn, 1995). Eng. organist, conductor, and composer. Ass. org. to Brewer, Gloucester Cath. 1916–17 and again 1919–22. Org., Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, London, 1922–6. Prof. of harmony and counterpoint, Curtis Inst. 1926–8. Org. and choirmaster Gloucester Cath. 1928–67, cond. at 3 Choirs Fests. within that period. Dir. of mus., Cheltenham Ladies College, 1935–68. Wrote org. mus., church services, etc. CBE 1961.
