Stuntz, Joseph Hartmann

Stuntz, Joseph Hartmann, Swiss conductor and composer of German descent; b. Arlesheim, near Basel, July 23, 1793; d. Munich, June 18, 1859. He studied with Peter von Winter in Munich (1808-12) and with Salieri in Vienna (1813-16), then returned to Munich as conductor of the Italian Opera, where he produced his successful opera La rappresaglia (composed 1818-20). In 1825 he was named conductor of the German Opera, but shortly afterward assumed the conductorship of the Court Orch., a position he retained for the rest of his life. He wrote the Singspiel Heinrich IV zu Givry (Munich, 1820), the tragic opera Maria Rosa (Munich, n.d.), many ballets, cantatas, masses, choruses, and songs.
