Strickland, Lily (Teresa)

Strickland, Lily (Teresa), American composer; b. Anderson, S.C., Jan. 28, 1887; d. Hendersonville, N.C., June 6, 1958. She studied at Converse Coll. in Spartanburg, S.C. (1901-4) and then with Albert Mildenberg, William Henry Humiston, Daniel Gregory Mason, and Percy Goetschius at the Inst. of Musical Art in N.Y.; also received private lessons from Alfred John Goodrich. She married J. Courtney Anderson of N.Y. in 1912; traveled in the Orient between 1920 and 1930, and spent several years in India; then returned to the U.S. Among her works were several operettas, including Jewel of the Desert (1933) and Laughing Star of Zuni (1946), orch. suites, the sacred cantata St. John the Beloved (1930), many piano suites, and numerous songs.
