Strassburg, Robert
Strassburg, Robert, American conductor, teacher, and composer; b. N.Y, Aug. 30, 1915. He studied composition with Marion Bauer at N.Y.U., then enrolled at Harvard Univ. (M.A., 1950). He was conductor and founder of the All-Miami Youth Sym. (1957–60). In 1961 he joined the faculty of the Univ. of Judaism in Los Angeles; from 1966 he was on the faculty of Calif. State Coll. His works include 4 Biblical Statements for Strings (1946), Fantasy and Allegro for Violin and Orch. (1947), Torah Sonata for Piano (1950), Chelm, folk opera (1956), and Tropal Suite for Strings (1967). He is the author of a monograph, Ernest Block, Voice in the Wilderness (Los Angeles, 1977).
