Sternberg, Jonathan, American conductor; b. N.Y., July 27, 1919. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music (1929–31), N.Y.U. (B.A., 1939; graduate study, 1939–40), and the Manhattan School of Music (1946); took conducting lessons with Monteux at his summer school (1946, 1947). In 1947 he made his conducting debut with the Vienna Sym. Orch.; then toured extensively as a guest conductor in Europe, North America, and the Far East. He was music director of the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp (1961–62), the Harkness Ballet in N.Y. (1966–68), and the Atlanta Opera and Ballet (1968–69); then was a visiting prof. of conducting at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. (1969–71), a prof. of music at Temple Univ. (1971–89), and a lecturer at Chestnut Hill Coll. (from 1989).
