Solomon, Yonty
Solomon, Yonty, South African-born English pianist and teacher; b. Cape Town, May 3, 1938. He was a pupil of Cameron Taylor at the Univ. of Cape Town (B.Mus., 1958). In 1963 he won the Beethoven International Award and settled in London, where he continued his training with Dame Myra Hess. He later studied with Agosti in Rome and Rosen in the U.S. He appeared as a soloist with orchs. in Europe, North America, South Africa, and Israel, and also gave recitals. Solomon was also active as a prof. at the Royal Coll. of Music and gave various master classes in other locales. In addition to the standard piano literature, he championed many composers of the modern age, among them Janáček, Ives, Schoenberg, Prokoviev, Sorabji, Bennett, and Josephs.
