Soffredini, Alfredo, Italian writer on music, teacher, and composer; b. Livorno, Sept. 17, 1854; d. Milan, March 12, 1923. He studied with Mazzucato and Sangalli at the Milan Cons. He ed. Milan’s influential Gazzetta Musicale (1896–1912), and also taught composition, numbering among his students Mascagni. He composed 8 operas to his own librettos: II Saggio (Livorno, Feb. 3, 1883), 2-act children’s opera, II piccolo Haydn (Faenza, Nov. 24, 1889), Salvatorello (Pavia, March 25, 1894), Tarcisio (Milan, Nov. 23, 1895), Aurora (Pavia, April 21, 1897), La coppa d’oro (Milan, Jan. 27, 1900), Graziella (Pavia, Nov. 15, 1902), and II leone (Cesena, 1914).
