Silva Óscar da
Silva, Óscar da, Portuguese pianist, teacher, and composer; b. Paranhos, near Oporto, April 21, 1870; d. Oporto, March 6, 1958. He studied at the Lisbon Cons., and in 1892 he went to Leipzig, where he had lessons with Reinecke and Clara Schumann. Returning to Portugal in 1910, he devoted himself mainly to teaching, acquiring a very high reputation as a piano pedagogue. From 1932 to 1952 he lived in Brazil, and then returned to Portugal. He wrote an opera, Dona Meda (Lisbon, July 4, 1901); a symphonic poem, Alma crucificada; chamber music; songs; effective piano pieces.
