Shcherbachev, Vladimir (Vladimirovich)

Shcherbachev, Vladimir (Vladimirovich), Russian composer; b. Warsaw, Jan. 24, 1889; d. Leningrad, March 5, 1952. He studied at the St. Petersburg Cons. with Maximilian Steinberg and Liadov, graduating in 1914. From 1924 to 1931 he was a prof. of composition at the Leningrad Cons. He wrote an opera, Anna Kolosova (1939), 5 syms.: No. 1 (1913; Petrograd, Nov. 5, 1916), No. 2 (1922–24; Leningrad, Dec. 14, 1924), No. 3 (1926–31; Leningrad, Feb. 4, 1932, composer conducting), No. 4, History of the Izhorsky Factory (1932–34; partial perf., Leningrad, May 28, 1934; first complete perf., Radio Leningrad, Dec. 23, 1935; first public perf., Leningrad, May 28, 1934; fir st 5, Russkaya (1942–8; Leningrad, Dec. 21, 1948; rev. version, Kiev, Oct. 21, 1950), and music for films, the orch. suite from one, The Thunderstorm, becoming popular in Russia. He further wrote A Fairy Tale for Orch. (Petrograd, Dec. 20, 1915), Nonet (1917), numerous piano works, and songs.
