Segni, Julio

Segni, Julio, important Italian organist, harpsichordist, and composer, known as Julio da Modena ; b. Modena, 1498; d. Rome, July 23, 1561. He studied singing with Bidon da Asti in Modena, where he sang plainchant at the Cathedral (1513), and also was a pupil of Giacomo Fogliano (1512–14). He later went to Rome, where his performances at the Vatican were acclaimed. After serving as first organist at San Marco in Venice (1530–32), he entered the service of Guido Ascanio Sforza, Cardinal of S. Fiore, in Rome. Segni was regarded as the foremost organist of his time. A number of his impressive ricercari have been pubi, in modern eds.
