Schreiber, Frederick (actually, Friedrich)
Schreiber, Frederick (actually, Friedrich ), Austrian-American organist, choirmaster, and composer; b. Vienna, Jan. 13, 1895; d. N.Y., Jan. 15, 1985. He studied piano, cello, and composition in Vienna. After teaching at the Cons. there (1927–38), he emigrated to N.Y. and was organist and choirmaster of the Reformed Protestant Church (1939–58). Among his orch. works are 7 syms. (1927–57); The Beatitudes, symphonic trilogy for Orch. and Chorus (1950); Christmas Suite (1967); Images (1971); Contrasts (1972); 2 piano concertos; Cello Concerto; 2 violin concertos; Variations on a German Folksong (1974); numerous choral pieces; chamber music, including 2 string quintets, 7 string quartets, Piano Quartet, and 3 piano trios; much organ music.
