Schmitz, (Franz) Arnold

Schmitz, (Franz) Arnold, German musicologist; b. Sablon, near Metz, July 11, 1893; d. Mainz, Nov. 1, 1980. He took courses in musicologi history, and philosophy at the univs. of Bonn, Munich, and Berlin; his principal mentors were Friedlaender, Kroyer, Sandberger, Schiedermair, and Wolf; received his Ph.D. in 1919 from the Univ. of Bonn with the diss. Untersuchungen über des jungen Schumann Anschauungen vom musikalischen Schaffen; completed his Habilitation there in 1921. He taught there (1921–28) and at the Dortmund Cons. (1925–29), then at the univs. of Breslau (1929–39) and Mainz (1947–61); he served as rector at the latter (1953–54; 1960–61); later taught at the Univ. of Basel (1947–67).
