Schipper, Emil (Zacharias)
Schipper, Emil (Zacharias), Austrian bass-baritone; b. Vienna, Aug. 19, 1882; d. there, July 20, 1957. He studied in Vienna and with Guarino in Milan. He made his operatic debut at the German Theater in Prague in 1904 as Telramund; then sang in Linz (1911–12), at the Vienna Volksoper (1912–15), the Bavarian Court (later State) Opera (1916–22), and the Vienna State Opera (1922–28); also made guest appearances at Covent Garden in London (1924–28), in Chicago (1928–29), and in Salzburg (1930; 193536). His finest roles were in operas by Wagner and R. Strauss. He was married to Maria Olczewska .
