Sás (Orchassal), Andrés, French-born Peruvian composer; b. Paris, April 6, 1900; d. Lima, July 25, 1967. He went to Brussels, where he studied harmony at the Anderlecht Academy, violin with Marchot, chamber music with Miry, and music history with Closson at the Cons., and counterpoint and fugue privately with Imbert. In 1924 he was engaged by the Peruvian government to teach violin at the National Academy of Music in Lima; in 1928 he returned temporarily to Belgium; the following year, he settled in Lima permanently. He married the Peruvian pianist Lily Rosay, and with her established the Sás-Rosay Academy of Music. He became profoundly interested in Peruvian folk music, and collected folk melodies; made use of many of them in his own compositions.
