Sartori, Claudio
Sartori, Claudio, eminent Italian music scholar and bibliographer; b. Brescia, April 1, 1913; d. Milan, March 11, 1994. He received an arts degree in 1934 from the Univ. of Pavia with a thesis in music history, then studied with Gerold at the Univ. of Strasbourg and with Vittadini at the Pavia Cons. He served as an asst. librarian at the Bologna Cons. (1938−42), where in 1943 he was appointed prof. of Italian literature; in 1967 he assumed a similar professorship at the Milan Cons. He founded and became director of the Ufficio Ricerche Musicali in 1965; its aim was to conduct a thorough codification of Italian musical sources, providing information on all MSS and publ, music in Italy before 1900, on all publ, librettos in Italy down to 1800, and on all literature on music in Italy. In addition to this invaluable compilation, he also served as ed.-in-chief of Dizionario Ricordi della musica e dei musicisti (Milan, 1959). In 1983 he was made a corresponding member of the American Musicological Soc.
