Rothwell, Walter Henry

Rothwell, Walter Henry , English-American conductor; b. London, Sept. 22, 1872; d. Santa Monica, Calif., March 12, 1927. He studied at the Vienna Cons. with J. Epstein (piano), R. Fuchs (theory), and Bruckner (composition), and then took further courses in Munich with Thuille and Schillings. In 1895 he became asst. conductor to Mahler at the Hamburg Opera, and then conducted the German opera in Amsterdam (1903–04) and the Savage Opera Co. in the U.S. (1904–08). He was conductor of the St. Paul Sym. Orch. (1908–14). In 1919 he was engaged to organize and conduct the Los Angeles Phil. Orch., which he led until his death.
