Ross, Scott

ROSS, Scott , American harpsichordist and organist; b. Pittsburgh, March 1, 1951; d. Assas, France, June 14, 1989. He went to France in his youth and entered the Nice Cons. in 1965 to study organ with René Saorgin and harpsichord with Huguette Grémy-Chauliac, taking the premier prix on the latter instrument in 1968. hi 1969 he entered the Paris Cons. and studied harpsichord with Robert Veyron-Lacroix. Upon completing his training there in 1971, he pursued further studies in harpsichord with Kenneth Gilbert and was awarded a diplôme supérieur in 1972. In 1971 he captured 1st prize in the Bruges competition. In 1973 he became a prof. at Laval Univ. in Quebec, remaining primarily active in France as a harpsichordist and organist. Ross was held in high regard for his insightful interpretations of 17th-and 18th-century music, especially the works of Bach, Scarlatti, and composers of the French school.
