Rautio, Matti , Finnish composer and teacher; b. Helsinki, Feb. 25, 1922; d. Tampere, June 22, 1986. He studied at the Univ. of Helsinki (M.A., 1945), and also took courses in composition and piano at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (certificate, 1950), where he served on its faculty as a piano teacher (1947–64), senior theory teacher (from 1956), and director of the school music dept. (1966–70). In his Works, he followed a median line of modern music, programmatic and utilitarian in the use of advanced techniques.

Divertimento 1 for Cello and Orch. or Piano (1955) and 2 for Cello and Piano (1972); Sininen haikara (The Blue Heron), suite from the ballet (1957); Tanhumusiikkia (Folk Dance Music) for Soprano, Baritone, Chorus, and Orch. (1960); Piano Concerto (1968–71).
