Pothier, Dom Joseph

Pothier, Dom Joseph , learned French music scholar; b. Bouzemont, near Saint-Dié, Dec. 7, 1835; d. Conques, Belgium, Dec. 8, 1923. He was ordained a priest (1858). He became a Benedictine monk in 1860 at Solesmes, in 1862, sub-prior, in 1866, prof. of theology at the Solesmes Monastery, in 1893, prior at the Benedictine monastery of Liguge, and in 1898, abbot at St-Wandrille. When the religious orders were banned from France, he moved to Belgium. In 1904 he was appointed by Pope Pius X president of the publ. committee of the Editio Vaticana.
