Porter, Hugh

Porter, Hugh , American organist and pedagogue; b. Heron Lake, Minn., Sept. 18, 1897; d. N.Y., Sept. 22, 1960. He studied at the American Cons. in Chicago (B.M., 1920), Northwestern Univ. (B.A., 1924), with Middelschulte, Farnam, Noble, and Boulanger, and at the Union Theological Seminary in N.Y. (M.S.M., 1930; D.S.M., 1944). He taught at Northwestern Univ., the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y., N.Y.U., and the Mannes Coll. of Music in N.Y. In 1931 he joined the faculty of the Union Theological Seminary, where he was director (from 1945) and a prof. (from 1947). Porter also held many positions as a church organist, toured as a recitalist, and was organist at the Chatauqua Institution. With his wife Ethel Porter, he ed. the United Church of Christ Pilgrim Hymnal (1958).
